MOTT GALLERY OF HISTORY AND ART

Just 36 miles south of I-94 on highway 8 is the lovely town of Mott. Gardens and yards are watered with Cannonball River water piped to each residence, and folks are proud of their flowers, lawns and gardens. After a leisurely drive through town, stop at the Mott Gallery of History & Art in the center of Mott’s business district. The gallery, housed in the historic bank building, offers much about the history of the area, as well as the work of many local artists, including painters, woodworkers and needle craft artisans. Upon entering the museum folks may greet the “Biker Thinker”, a life-size metal sculpture by local artist, Raymond Oscar Rogers. His artwork includes metal, bronzes and many sketches which are shown throughout the museum.    Another item of special interest is a world globe. For many decades, Mott has had the distinction of being the smallest town in the continental United States to have a place on the globe. There are many theories about how this came to be. Read about all the possibilities, then mull them over while wandering through the rooms of school, military, business history and agricultural displays. Among new exhibits added for the 2008 season are displays on the Mott Airport and history of Depression Glass.   The Stern Homestead exhibit has also been enlarged. This homestead, east of Mott, has now been nominated to be placed on the National Historic Register, and the display tells the story of the Stern family - immigrants, pioneers and homesteaders.   Looking out the wide gallery windows two city parks with murals are visible. A mural of Mott’s old Rainbow Bridge to the north is a wonderful memory of times past, as well as the Pioneer Park just east of the gallery. There, a mural depicts old-time life on the prairie amid walking plows, trees and a lovely lawn. Both murals were painted by local artist, Janelle Brackel.

Mott is proud of its gallery. Future plans are unfolding to add an annex that will house larger farming displays and equipment. Come and enjoy a look at Mott’s past.
